The two most important things to consider when hiring a Realtor are character and competence. Character is the easiest to see. How do you feel about the person you’re interviewing? Also ask for referrals and look for testimonials or reviews from past clients. I also suggest you ask people you trust for referrals.
So how do you decide on competence? If you’re selling a property you want to know how many homes the agent sold in the last year and what their sale price to list price ratio is. Those two things will let you know how active a Realtor is and how accurate their pricing suggestions are. That can save you tens of thousands of dollars. If you’re buying you want someone that has a track record of negotiating well for clients, winning multiple offer bids in our current market and who is available when you are to see homes.
